INTERNET service providers and social media services have indicated their readiness to be licensed, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.
He said he had just returned from Singapore, where he had met several social platform providers who understood that Malaysia was an important market.
Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had not received licence applications from social media and messaging platforms.
“We are in the engagement process, and based on my meetings and discussions, I am confident they have indicated their readiness in principle to be licensed,” he said in Cyberjaya today,
The MCMC on July 27 announced that social media and online messaging platforms with at least eight million users in Malaysia must apply for a licence from August 1.
The requirement is part of a new regulatory framework to ensure a safer online ecosystem.
The licence regulation will be enforced starting January 1.
Fahmi said Malaysia does not intend to shut down or suspend platforms that fail to comply with the regulations.
"Each country has the right to implement measures they deem appropriate according to their their laws and regulations.
