Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon have agreed a new ceasefire, US government sources said on Friday.

The agreement, brokered by the United States and Qatar, came into effect at 4 pm (1300 GMT), the sources said.

Israeli airstrikes in response to what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a violation by Hezbollah of an existing ceasefire arrangement had put the freshly signed deal between the US and Iran under threat, with talks planned for Friday in Switzerland called off at the last minute.

Iran and the US reached a bilateral framework agreement this week that provides for a comprehensive end to military conflicts in the region.
