Iran launched a fresh barrage of retaliation strikes on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, killing at least three, injuring dozens and sending terrified civilians into shelters.

Israel said the military’s defence systems have been intercepting the missiles throughout the day Friday, and that most were intercepted or fell short. Air raid sirens could once again be heard across Israel as the sun began to rise on Saturday.

The strikes were in retaliation to Israel’s blistering attacks on the heart of Iran’s nuclear and military structure overnight Friday, a barrage it said was necessary before Iran got any closer to building an atomic weapon.

At least 78 people were killed and more than 300 wounded in the strikes on Iran, the country’s ambassador told the U.N. Security Council. He said “the overwhelming majority” of victims were civilians.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel initiated a war and it would not be allowed to do "hit and run" attacks without grave consequences. He vowed not to let Israel “escape safely from this great crime.”

Earlier on Friday, Israel said 200 fighter jets took part in strikes on more than 100 targets in Iran overnight in an escalation that threatens to spark a wider conflict in the Middle East.

Israel has long threatened to carry out military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, claiming Tehran was secretly building an atomic bomb.

The strikes were carried out Friday, raising the prospect of a regional war between the longtime foes over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country had started a “targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival.”

"This operation will take as long as is needed to complete the task of fending off the threat of annihilation against us," he added.

Lammy: Middle East facing 'moment of grave peril'

Friday 13 June 2025 23:59

,

Jabed Ahmed

The Middle East is facing a “moment of grave peril”, foreign secretary David Lammy has said.

Speaking to broadcasters about Israel’s strikes on Iran, Mr Lammy said: “I spoke to my Iranian counterpart today to urge restraint at this time and calm. I recognise that this is a moment of grave peril in the Middle East.”

Mr Lammy stressed the UK was not involved in the Israeli action, saying: “This is a unilateral act by Israel.”

But he would not be drawn into revealing whether the UK was given prior warning by Israel.

The Foreign Secretary also described the situation as “fast moving”, adding: “My understanding is that there has been further action whilst I’ve been speaking to you, so this is fast moving, but what we are saying is: Let’s step back. Let’s have restraint. Let’s return to diplomacy.

“No one wants to see wider escalation in the Middle East, but everyone wants to see us deal with the problem of Iran’s desire to enrich itself with uranium and its nuclear ambition, everyone wants to see that dealt with diplomatically.”

IAEA chief tells UN: Iran's above-ground Natanz enrichment plant destroyed

Friday 13 June 2025 22:59

,

Jabed Ahmed

The above-ground pilot enrichment plant at Iran's Natanz nuclear site has been destroyed, UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi told a meeting of the UN Security Council.

"At present, the Iranian authorities are informing us of attacks on two other facilities, namely the Fordow fuel enrichment plant and at Isfahan," the International Atomic Energy Agency's Grossi told the 15-member council.

"At this moment we do not have enough information beyond indicating that military activity has been taking place around these facilities as well," he said.

Iran is enriching uranium up to 60% purity, close to weapons-grade of 90%, at the Natanz pilot plant.

But the Fordow site, which is dug into a mountain, produces more of the material, and military experts say it would be difficult for Israel to destroy through bombardment.

Grossi said the electricity infrastructure at Natanz was also destroyed and the loss of power to a cascade hall may have damaged centrifuges there. But the level of radioactivity outside Natanz has remained unchanged and normal, he said.

Damage to Iranian nuclear sites so far appears limited, experts say

Friday 13 June 2025 22:43

,

Jabed Ahmed

The damage to Iran's nuclear facilities from Israel's initial wave of air strikes appeared to be limited, experts have said.

"The first day was aimed at things that you would get through surprise - killing leadership, going after nuclear scientists, air defense systems, the ability to retaliate," said nuclear expert David Albright at the Institute for Science and International Security.

"We can't see any visible damage at Fordow or Isfahan. There was damage at Natanz," said Albright, referring to Iranian nuclear sites. But "there's no evidence that the underground site was destroyed."

Albright said his analysis was based on the latest available images from about 11.20am Tehran time. He added there may also have been drone strikes on tunnels to underground centrifuge plants and cyber attacks that did not leave visible traces.

"In terms of visible damage, we don't see much and we'll see what happens tonight," he said, adding that he believes Israel's strikes were still in an early stage.

Iran accuses Israel of 'calculated aggression' and blames US for civilian deaths

Iran’s representative at the UN Security Council, Amir-Saeid Iravani, said the “barbaric and criminal” attacks had targeted nuclear facilities, civilian infrastructure and residential areas across the country.

He reported that 78 people had been killed and more than 320 injured, the “overwhelming majority” of them civilians.

Iravani described the strikes as a “deliberate and systematic” campaign, calling them a “chilling display of calculated aggression”.

He also accused the United States of being “complicit”, claiming it had provided “aid and assistance” that enabled the attacks.

“We will not forget that our people lost their lives as a result of the Israeli attacks with American weapons,” he said.

Iravani called on the UN Security Council to condemn Israel’s actions and hold it accountable.

Netanyahu urges Iranian people to ‘stand up' against Islamic regime

Friday 13 June 2025 20:23

,

Jabed Ahmed

Benjamin Netanyahu has delivered a direct message to the people of Iran as Israel continues what he described as “one of the greatest military operations in history”.

In a video address, Netanyahu said “Operation Rising Lion” is aimed at neutralising the Islamic regime’s nuclear and missile capabilities.

He claimed the offensive could also pave the way for ordinary Iranians to gain their freedom.

“In the past 24 hours, we have taken out top military commanders, senior nuclear scientists, the Islamic regime’s most significant enrichment facility and a large portion of its ballistic missile arsenal,” he said.

“More is on the way. The regime does not know what hit them, or what will hit them.”

Calling on Iranians to rise up, he repeated the slogan associated with anti-regime protests: “Woman, Life, Freedom – Zan, Zendegi, Azadi.”

He stressed Israel’s fight was with the regime, not the people of Iran, and invoked a historic friendship between the nations.

“The time has come for the Iranian people to unite around its flag and its historic legacy,” he said, ending with: “Brave people of Iran, light defeats the darkness.”
