Iran launched two separate missile barrages at Israel early Thursday, causing light injuries and damage in central areas as tensions between the arch-foes escalate.

JERUSALEM: Israel’s military said its air defences responded to two waves of Iranian missile fire early Thursday.

Police were called to “several” impact sites in central Israel, with media reports specifying nine locations.

Four people were lightly wounded, according to reports citing medics.

Israeli media attributed the widespread damage to the suspected use of cluster munitions, which explode mid-air and scatter bomblets.

Less than two hours after the first attack, the military announced it had again “identified missiles launched from Iran toward the territory of the State of Israel”. This triggered air raid sirens across much of northern and central Israel.

A separate statement a short while later said residents were “permitted to leave protected spaces in all areas of the country”.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the second reported attack.

The attacks follow an incident on Wednesday, as Jewish Israelis prepared for Passover, where Iranian missile fire wounded 14 people including an 11-year-old girl.

Iran and Israel have a history of accusing each other of using cluster bombs in the conflict.
