The Israeli military has warned residents of southern Lebanon not to return to their home villages despite a new push for a ceasefire in Lebanon.
"Fighting in southern Lebanon is continuing," a spokesman posted in Arabic on X on Thursday. He said targets of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia were being struck.
Residents were told not to travel south of the Zahrani river, around 40 kilometres north of the Israeli border. Anyone travelling south was putting their life in danger, the post said.
Israel and Lebanon had overnight agreed on a new path to implementing the ceasefire. Hezbollah has so far made no comment on the matter.
A ceasefire had already been in place, but it was effectively non-functional as mutual attacks continued almost unabated.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon have been displaced by the war, which has been ongoing since the beginning of March. Many people there fear a continuation of the existing ceasefire, which has failed to bring about any de-escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
