The recent release of security camera footage by Israel's military has sparked controversy and raised questions about the use of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. The footage, which was allegedly taken on October 7, shows individuals being taken into the hospital, purportedly as hostages captured by Hamas during their attacks on southern Israel. The military claims that Hamas utilizes the hospital as a base, a claim that has faced pressure to be substantiated.
However, Hamas and medical staff have vehemently denied the existence of a command center within the hospital. The footage itself consists of two clips, one showing a man being dragged into the hospital by armed men, and the other displaying an injured man being brought in on a gurney by armed individuals. While the footage is time-stamped, its authenticity has yet to be verified by AFP.
Military spokesperson Daniel Hagari described the individuals in the footage as hostages from Nepal and Thailand, stating that their current whereabouts remain unknown. The footage aligns with the timeline of Hamas's attacks on southern Israel, resulting in numerous casualties and the kidnapping of hundreds of people, as reported by Israeli authorities. In response to the footage, the military and intelligence services have claimed that Hamas used the Shifa hospital complex as a terrorist infrastructure during the attacks.
However, Hamas has dismissed the footage, asserting that they brought captives to the hospital for treatment due to injuries caused by Israeli airstrikes. Further details were provided regarding the death of 19-year-old soldier Noa Marciano, who was taken hostage during the conflict. The army stated that her remains were recovered in the vicinity of Al-Shifa, countering Hamas's claim that she was killed by an Israeli airstrike.
The military spokesperson explained that Marciano was held by Hamas in close proximity to the hospital, and it was during combat in that area that her captor was killed and she received non-life-threatening injuries. According to the military's "concrete intelligence," Hamas terrorists then took Marciano to Shifa hospital, where she was ultimately murdered. Her body was later found outside the hospital on an orange stretcher.
The release of this footage and the ensuing statements have fueled a contentious debate between Israel and Hamas, where each party presents their version of events. The authenticity of the footage and the truth behind the allegations against Al-Shifa hospital are matters that require further investigation and verification.
