The Israeli Air Force has intercepted a drone "launched from the east," the country's military said on Tuesday.

The Times of Israel newspaper reported that the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen is suspected of being behind the attack.

"No sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol," the military said in a statement on Telegram.

Residents of the Israeli coastal city of Eilat, located at the southern tip of the country, reported having observed traces of an interceptor missile in the sky, according to local media.

If confirmed, this would be the first Houthi attack on Israel since the ceasefire in the Iran war began last month. The Islamist Houthis control large parts of Yemen and are closely allied with Tehran, from which they receive substantial military support.

The Houthis regularly attacked Israel during the Gaza war in solidarity with Hamas, another Iran-backed group, and also attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis also targeted Israel several times during the Iran war.
