If you run out of lemon, you can sometimes use orange as a substitute for its citrusy taste. How do you find an alternative for the rice?

The Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, said tapioca is a good substitute for rice while Malaysians wait for the local rice supply issues to be solved.

“We get carbohydrate from the rice. Tapioca is also a good source of carbohydrate and the sugar level is also much lower as compared to rice.”

The idea may seem unusual or bizarre to others but according to Johari, many members of Parliament in Sarawak survive with that alternative. Some of them even plant tapiocas as additional food sources reported Astro Awani.

“I was told that it’s a successful idea in Sarawak to introduce tapioca as a substitute of rice.”

Johari also believes that it’s one way out of the existing rice supply issues—not letting the issue control the condition of the people in this country.

He added that Malaysians have enormous potential to produce food sources to reduce dependence on imported food supplies.

“I think the time has come for the state government and the local authorities (PBT) to open the door for the people to make good use of the abandoned land to plant various food sources such as vegetables.”

What do you think of Johari’s idea?
