Former Finance Minister, Tun Daim Zainuddin, has come forward to challenge the actions of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), accusing them of being embroiled in a politically motivated investigation targeting him and his family. In a recent statement released on December 28, Daim expressed his concerns and provided insights into the ongoing situation.

Daim began by highlighting that despite his stature as a former senior government official, he has maintained his silence, hoping to show respect for the investigative process. However, he felt compelled to break his silence due to what he perceives as unwarranted comments and statements from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and MACC Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki.

"Despite my repeated written queries to the MACC, I have not been informed of the specific allegations against me," Daim asserted. He further revealed that he had received correspondence from Azam Baki, declining to specify the exact nature of the offense being investigated.

The former minister did not mince words when addressing Anwar's motives, suggesting that the politician views him as a political adversary. Daim elaborated on the apparent conflict of interest, highlighting that the Chief Commissioner's appointment or extension of tenure is contingent upon the Prime Minister's decision. This, Daim insinuated, potentially compromises the impartiality of the investigation.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the public discourse surrounding the investigation, Daim cited instances where both Anwar and Azam allegedly made prejudicial comments against him. He criticized the MACC for purportedly leaking details of the investigation, emphasizing the detrimental impact such actions could have on his reputation.

"I have consistently cooperated with the MACC, ensuring that all requested financial disclosures were made in adherence to the law," Daim stated emphatically. He expressed deep-seated concerns about the integrity of Malaysian institutions, emphasizing the need for transparency, fairness, and an absence of political bias.

The ongoing saga took a significant turn when the MACC seized the iconic Ilham Tower, a 60-story edifice owned by Daim's family. The move came after the MACC declared that an offense under the MACC Act 2009 had been identified. The subsequent notice, dated December 18, received widespread coverage in local media outlets.

To provide context, earlier in May, the MACC had initiated investigations into an alleged misappropriation amounting to RM2.3 billion, implicating a former minister and businessman.

In conclusion, Daim's public statement underscores the complexities and potential political undertones surrounding high-profile investigations in Malaysia. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains imperative for all parties involved to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and due process, ensuring that the nation's institutions remain robust, credible, and beyond reproach.
