Following his victory in the Paris Olympics 2024, Lee Zii Jia continues to make Malaysians proud, and just recently, the bronze medallist participated in the VICTOR Denmark Open 2024.
Unfortunately, Lee is unable to continue with the game. In an official statement last night (October 14) by his team, Lee revealed that he had to withdraw from the game after suffering from an ankle injury during the Quarters of the Artic Open, in which Lee lost in the final eight on Friday (11 October), according to the information on the official Olympics website.
Lee was playing against Japanese player Watanabe Koki last Friday and despite bringing himself to the court in Denmark yesterday, he couldn’t give his best due to the injury.
“The discomfort in his ankle prevented him to move at match-level quality.”
At the Arctic Open, Vantaa, Finland, Lee lost the champion status after being stranded in the quarter-finals at Energia Areena, Vantaa, when he lost, 15-21, 21-13, 12-21 to the Japanese champion, Koki Watanabe in 66 minutes.
For the record, it was Lee’s 3rd defeat to Watanabe, after having previously lost during the China Open and the semi-finals of the Swiss Open last year.
The latest development saw the eighth seed from Indonesia, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, take Zii Jia’s position opposite Nishimoto.
Regardless, we hope Lee will get the rest he needs, and recuperate before he returns to the court to make Malaysians proud again!
