Dragon boats slice through the waters of the Kuantan River to the beat of pounding drums. A brightly coloured hot air balloon slowly rises into the morning sky. A few hundred metres away, racing cars drift sideways belching clouds of tyre smoke, sending spectators into fits of excitement.

From July 31 to August 2, the three-day celebration promises to be its biggest edition yet, with 14 major attractions expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors from across Malaysia and overseas.
More than just another festival, Pesta Kuantan 188 has evolved into one of the country's most successful event tourism stories, combining sports, culture, music, food and community activities around one of Malaysia's most recognisable landmarks.
Event now listed in Visit Malaysia Year 2026 calendar
The festival, organised by Infiniti Indah Sdn Bhd, the hospitality arm of MAA Group Berhad, has also earned national recognition after being included in the official Visit Malaysia Year 2026 calendar.
At the heart of the celebration stands the 188-metre Kuantan 188 Tower, the tallest observation tower on the East Coast and the second tallest in Malaysia. For three days, the iconic structure becomes the centrepiece of a non-stop carnival stretching along the city's picturesque riverfront.
Visitors will have no shortage of things to do.
Thrill seekers can buckle up for one of the festival's most talked-about attractions — the Kuantan 188 Drift Car Experience.
Forget simply watching from the sidelines.
Here, visitors can climb into a specially prepared drift car and experience the adrenaline rush of tandem drifting alongside professional drivers.

Trinidad Hospitality Group CEO Dato Sri Naresh Mohan said visitors could experience the thrills of tandem drifting in Kuantan and all the other activities, food and entertainment lined up.
However, caution should be exercised by those who have heart or health conditions when they take on challenging, exciting and vigorous activities.
“But it’s going to be very exciting,” Naresh pointed out.
“Especially the G-force you will be facing with when the cars drift on the tarmac. With all the drifting, we expect about 400 to 500 tyres to be burnt during the festival."
Trinidad Hospitality Group director of business development Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said: "It is something everyone should try at least once. You will probably come out feeling 10 years younger."
Visitors can ride hot air balloons for magnificent views
For those who prefer a gentler adventure, colourful hot air balloons will offer spectacular aerial views over Kuantan, revealing sweeping vistas of the South China Sea, the Kuantan River, mangrove forests and the rapidly developing city skyline.
The prestigious Royal Pahang Dragon Boat Regatta returns with elite 12-crew teams competing across four fierce categories which is the Pahang Open, Pahang Open (Mixed), Pahang Closed, and the Pahang Inter-District categories.
Athletes looking for a serious challenge can sign up for the Kuantan 188 Towerthon Challenge, climbing all 524 steps of the tower in a race against both gravity and the clock.
However, only the bravest will attempt the Kuantan 188 Antenna Climb, scaling beyond the observation deck to the tower's highest point.
Competitions, concerts and fireworks at Pahang's capital
The sporting line-up continues with the Resorts World Genting Pickleball Championship, Street Football competitions and the Edu-tourism Xplore Fun Run. Car enthusiasts can admire customised vehicles during the Cars and Coffee gathering, while esports fans can watch some of the region's top PUBG Mobile players battle for supremacy in the Kuantan 188 E-Battle tournament.
One of the weekend's biggest attractions will undoubtedly be the Kuantan 188 Concert & Fireworks on Saturday night.
This year's entertainment line-up features Malaysian music legend Datuk M. Nasir, award-winning singers Hael Husaini and Nadeera, together with rising boy band Alpha, whose catchy hit P Ramlee Saloma has become one of Malaysia's biggest digital successes.
The concert will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display expected to light up the Kuantan skyline.
Families can also spend hours exploring the bustling Food Market, where dozens of vendors will serve everything from traditional Pahang delicacies to popular Malaysian street food.

Massive boost for local economy generated by Pesta
Beyond the entertainment, the festival is expected to deliver a significant boost to the local economy. Pesta Kuantan 188 is expected to generate around RM65 million in economic activity, benefiting hotels, restaurants, retailers, transport operators and tourism businesses throughout Kuantan.
Individual festival vendors are also expected to enjoy brisk business, with some average daily sales estimated at about RM10,000 per booth.
Tourism Malaysia director-general Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim said event tourism now contributes around seven per cent of Malaysia's domestic tourism industry, making festivals such as Pesta Kuantan 188 an increasingly important driver of local economic growth.
Its inclusion in the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 programme reflects the festival's growing reputation as a high-impact tourism product capable of attracting both domestic and international visitors. This event is endorsed by the Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan, Pahang State Government, Tourism Pahang, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Datuk Bandar Kuantan Dato Zaliza bin Zulkipli, who also attended the launch, noted that Kuantan 188 Festival had now become an annual event in Tourism Malaysia's promotional calendar and has been included as part of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 programme.
Coinciding with the birthdays of the Sultan of Pahang and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, the festival also celebrates the state's rich heritage while showcasing modern Kuantan as a vibrant destination where adventure, culture and hospitality come together.
Whether it is climbing 524 steps to the top of a tower, watching dragon boats race across the river, floating above the city in a hot air balloon, enjoying a free concert by some of Malaysia's biggest stars or simply spending quality time with family over good food, Pesta Kuantan 188 offers something for everyone.
