The hosts of The View are criticizing people who have celebrated the death of Lindsey Graham.
Graham died of a “brief and sudden illness” Saturday at age 71. His death has sparked divided reactions as the Republican senator leaves behind a controversial legacy due to his support of the Iran war, along with his shifting alliance with President Donald Trump.
“I saw a lot of posts online this week celebrating his death and rejoicing,” The View co-host Ana Navarro said during Monday’s episode. “I know Trump does that,” she said, referring to Trump’s polarizing comments after the deaths of director Rob Reiner, John McCain and former FBI director Robert Mueller.
“But it’s inhumane and it’s really lacking empathy,” Navarro continued. “The dead person is dead and can’t hear you and can’t read your posts, but his family — his sister, who he adopted when she was 13 when both of their parents died — is alive and is hearing it.”
She added: “So I think for the benefit of having normal decency towards the family of the dead, that just has to stop. The fact that Donald Trump is indecent doesn’t mean the rest of us have to do it.”
Sara Haines agreed, adding, “Today, the people that have passed aren’t going to read the comments or hear it, [but] the family that survived them and the friends and the people that worked for them remain here to hear what they have to say. He is no longer at play.
“It did disturb me that people were online saying things like ‘don’t humanize him.’ You don’t have to humanize a human. He was a human. There were people that loved him, people that cared for him, and whether I disagreed with him completely or not, he’s gone,” she said.
Whoopi Goldberg concluded: “He lived with himself. Him and God will figure out whatever went on. But at this point in time, he’s gone. God rest his soul. I don’t wish any bad on anybody. Even the ones you know I really should.”
Graham died from a ruptured aorta arising from a hardening of the arteries caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to Washington D.C.’s Medical Examiner.
Trump led the tributes to the South Carolina conservative, calling him a “tough cookie” and praising him for his support. Meanwhile, former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said on X that Graham would likely approve of U.S. forces continuing their attacks on Iran, writing: “Lindsey Graham would be proud. RIP.”
