Chinese-Muslim preacher Ridhuan Tee has once again raised concerns about the use of Bahasa Melayu on commercial signboards, this time focusing on businesses around Cheras LeisureMall.
In a post on Threads, he questioned whether local authorities were doing enough to regulate commercial signboards in the area, claiming some businesses display little or no Bahasa Melayu on their signs.
“This looks like Hong Kong. Where are the authorities?”
He described the area as looking “like Hong Kong”, saying the sheer number of commercial signboards and the lack of apparent regulation had created a situation that seemed almost out of control.
“The Malay language has fallen to third place,” he wrote, while questioning why some signboards allegedly do not use Malay at all.
He also questioned the local authorities’ enforcement role, asking whether they were “sleeping” while the situation continued.
He also highlighted another issue in the Cheras commercial area: roadside stalls occupying pedestrian walkways and road space.
According to him, the issue is not simply about the appearance of signboards, but also about how public spaces are being managed and regulated.
“Roadside stalls, pedestrian walkways, they just set up their stalls there as they please. But if it’s a Malay-owned stall, they’re quick to tear it down.”
Ridhuan’s comments come shortly after he criticised promotional banners for the Hungry Ghost Festival, for allegedly not including Bahasa Melayu.
