A second major resignation has emerged from the federal Cabinet just hours after the departure of Rafizi Ramli. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who has been serving as the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, has confirmed that he will be leaving office. His exit, scheduled to take effect on July 4, follows a defeat in the recent PKR party elections, where he failed to retain his vice-presidency—a role that had initially helped secure his Cabinet position.

Before stepping away, Nik Nazmi plans to go on leave starting May 29, marking a quiet transition period until his resignation becomes official. The decision appears to have been shaped not only by the election outcome but also by a personal conviction regarding the link between party leadership roles and ministerial responsibility.

Reflecting on his time in office, Nik Nazmi highlighted several achievements under his portfolio. He pointed to the amendments made to the Environmental Quality Act of 1974, which were seen as steps toward strengthening the country’s environmental governance. Greater transparency in environmental impact assessments was also cited as a notable development, alongside legislative successes such as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.

In matters of biodiversity, Malaysia under his stewardship became one of the early nations to submit its National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plan. This initiative, he noted, even drew commendation from the United Nations leadership. Reforms in water sector governance were also on the list of accomplishments, particularly the implementation of a new tariff-setting mechanism.

While offering thanks to civil servants and his support team, Nik Nazmi indicated that his departure from ministerial duties does not signal an end to his political journey. He plans to continue serving the people of Setiawangsa in his capacity as Member of Parliament, and hinted that stepping down would allow him to engage more deeply in politics and public service.

This move follows closely on the heels of Rafizi Ramli’s resignation as Economy Minister, after he lost the PKR deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar. The back-to-back resignations of two key figures not only alter the political landscape within the Cabinet but also raise broader questions about party leadership dynamics and the future direction of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.
