Just yesterday, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor advised Members of Parliament (MPs) to behave themselves as there is a perception by the public that the Parliament can be compared to a zoo.
While this MP’s words can hardly be considered chaotic or uncivilised, some Malaysians think that it’s most certainly unprofessional.
Being cut off
While presenting her argument yesterday in a parlimentary session, Kepala Batas MP Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad was cut off by a few other MPs.
However, she refused to let them speak over her and proceeded to talk about the issue of three female TikTokers who were allegedly body shamed after posting a video critiquing the ruling government.
“What is the position of the Minister of Communications and Digital regarding the bullying issue of three female ‘TikTokers’ who are facing personal information attacks and body shaming?” she asked energetically.
“In this regard, we hope the ministry does not show double standards even though these are TikTokers who support Perikatan Nasional (PN)“, she added.
This in turn made the atmosphere in Parliament more tense as more MPs stood to question the Perikatan Nasional member’s claims.
A savage line?
However, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau insisted on letting Siti Mastura finish her speech, so she asked all other MPs to sit back down.
Consequently, Siti Mastura stood back up to continue what she was saying and to “advise” the MPs who were unsatisfied by her speech.
She said, “Thank you tuan Yang Dipertua. It’s okay to be angry, but don’t koyak (panas tak apa, tapi jangan koyak)”.
Netizens have mixed reactions
Siti Mastura’s usage of the line, “It’s okay to be angry, but don’t koyak” gained a lot of attention from Malaysians online. The majority of reactions on TikTok and Twitter are very different because most of the her supporters are active on the video-sharing app.
On TikTok, Siti Mastura’s followers thought that what she said was very cool and “savage” whereas those on Twitter thought she was being very unprofessional and “rempit“.
“Kepala Batas is cool.”
“Aduh, how unfortunate Malaysians are to have chosen an MP like this. She uses rempit language in Parliament.”
“Stop using this kind of rempit language in Parliament. It looks unprofessional.”
