For every driver in Malaysia, they are required by law to renew their road tax and car insurance every year. If they are caught not doing so, they face stiff penalties as a result.
A Malaysian man who owned a luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) was nabbed by traffic enforcers for driving with an expired road tax and gave a rather weak excuse for it.

Kosmo reported that the 59-year-old driver was apprehended by officers from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) on the Grand Sepadu Highway heading towards Bukit Raja yesterday (Apr 16).
He was stopped by the officers during an operation codenamed Op Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) 2024 at around 11.30am.
Selangor JPJ director Azrin Borhan said the owner of the BMW X6 had just returned from purchasing goods at a shop in Kapar, Klang, before he was found to have a road tax which expired seven years ago.
He then gave the excuse of not renewing his road tax by saying he used the car only for short distances.
“He also admitted to not transferring the vehicle’s ownership after purchasing it,” he said.
Azrin said the BMW X6 was subsequently seized by JPJ officials under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act and taken to Shah Alam JPJ.
The car was also found not to have valid insurance, which is punishable under Section 90(1) of the same Act, which carries a fine not more than RM1,000, imprisonment not exceeding 3 months, or both if convicted, reported China Press.
