‘It’s Showtime’ told to explain racist skit

THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has conducted a hearing involving representatives of the TV show “It’s Showtime,” ABS-CBN Corp., GMA Network Inc., Zoe Broadcasting Network Inc., and ALLTV over issues arising from the program’s July 24 episode.

The hearing was held following the issuance of a Notice to Appear before the MTRCB’s Hearing and Adjudication Committee.

The board said all parties were given the opportunity to explain their side regarding concerns raised over the episode’s “Memerimar” segment.

The complaints stemmed from a “Memerimar” skit during the program’s “Laro Laro Pick” segment, where a remark made by Vice Ganda toward Baby Dolls member Johaira after a comedic routine drew criticism from some viewers for being racially insensitive.

The MTRCB said it listened to the explanations presented and reiterated its mandate under Presidential Decree No. 1986 and its implementing rules to ensure television programs comply with broadcast standards.

It said that, guided by the principle of parens patriae, it shares with stakeholders the responsibility of protecting and guiding young viewers.

The Hearing and Adjudication Committee ordered the respondents to submit a verified Joint Position Paper within seven calendar days.

It also directed the respondents to file a Joint Undertaking detailing how to strengthen compliance with MTRCB standards, particularly for live, improvised and comedy segments, and to designate an On-Air Compliance Officer authorized to intervene during live broadcasts when necessary.

The MTRCB said the case remains pending and will be resolved only after it evaluates the parties’ submissions and evidence on record.

It added it will refrain from making further statements that could prejudice the final disposition of the case.
