In the heartland of Malaysia's paddy fields, a dark secret has allegedly thrived for far too long - the existence of a paddy cartel that operates in the shadows, silently sabotaging the paddy industry, stifling yields, and robbing hardworking farmers of their rightful income.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has taken a brave step by shedding light on this clandestine operation, revealing how it not only affects the farming community but also impacts the availability and affordability of rice for consumers.

Sanusi's claims paint a disturbing picture of how this paddy cartel, like a phantom menace, goes unnoticed while manipulating the industry to double its profits.

The modus operandi is simple yet effective – when the price of imported rice skyrockets, the cartel cunningly switches local rice stocks to imported rice, capitalizing on the price difference

This deceitful tactic may involve altering packaging or labels to make local rice appear imported, thereby selling it at a higher retail price. It's a cunning manoeuvre that requires less effort than toiling in the paddy fields.

The consequences of such manipulation are dire. It drives down the prices of local rice, causing financial strain on honest farmers, while simultaneously inflating rice costs for consumers who are already grappling with economic challenges. The end result? A distorted rice market plagued by supply issues and skyrocketing prices.

Sanusi's revelation is a wake-up call for the government and consumers alike. It's a stark reminder that the battle against such cartels and corporate greed is far from over. The recent adjustment in the sale price of imported white rice by Bernas only exacerbates the situation, making rice even more expensive for consumers and adding to the woes of struggling farmers.

The question that looms large is, how long will we allow these cartels and 'dragons' to manipulate our nation's essential commodities and lead our government by the nose?

Sanusi makes it abundantly clear that the paddy cartel isn't a mere possibility; it's an unsettling reality that we can no longer ignore.

Sanusi's call to arms against the paddy cartel in Kedah is commendable, but it must extend beyond regional borders. It's high time that a concerted effort is made to eradicate such cartels and protect the interests of both farmers and consumers nationwide. This battle requires not only the vigilance of our leaders but also the support and awareness of the general public.

Mat Sabu's warning to millers about repackaging local rice as imported variety is a step in the right direction.

But, enforcement is key to stopping the exploitation of the rice industry. Warning alone may not stop the crooks.

In conclusion, the revelation of the paddy cartel's existence is a grim reminder of the nefarious forces at play in our agriculture sector.

It's time for collective action to ensure a fair and transparent rice market that benefits both our hardworking farmers and the ordinary citizens who rely on this staple food.

The rice cartel may have thrived in silence, but it's time to unmask this silent stranglehold and usher in a new era of transparency, fairness, and prosperity for all.
