Italy has announced a new national pilgrimage route – everything we know

  • Italy has launched a new national pilgrimage route, the ‘Cammino di Francesco – Il Cammino della Luce’, announced by the Ministry of Tourism on 30 July.
  • The route spans 1,546km (960 miles) across the regions Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria.
  • It honours St Francis of Assisi, coinciding with the 800th anniversary of his death.
  • The path incorporates existing trails and allows walkers to visit 22 Franciscan destinations, such as the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso.
  • The project represents a “unified synthesis of the numerous walks and itineraries inspired by the passage of Saint Francis and which retrace the history of the Franciscan Order,” according to the ministry.
