Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia’s jackfruit was promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security at the recent China-Asean Expo (Caexpo) at the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Guangxi, China.

Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister Chan Foong Hin, who led the four-day (Sept 16-19) campaign, roped in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who visited Caexpo 2023, to publicly sample eating jackfruit there which was widely covered in the Chinese media as the first shipment of Malaysian jackfruit to China.

In Sabah, jackfruit is grown commercially, and locals hope that as jackfruit gains popularity in China like durian, any price inflation would not impact the affordability and availability of the local fruit in Sabah. Anwar and Chan looking at a jackfruit display booth.

Locals noted that the price of tarap has risen in the urban tamu market.
