TAWAU: A woman who tried to board a flight from Tawau to Kuala Lumpur by using another person’s MyKad was jailed one month and fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail in default by the Magistrate’s court here, Thursday.
Malyn Julismu, 27, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu for committing the offence at the departure hall of the Tawau airport on July 27, 2022.
The holder of a Temporary Identification Card (MyKas) was charged with illegally having in her possession an identification card belonging to Norlina Abbai, 28.
Norlina had earlier reported that she lost her IC while shopping in Semporna.
She subsequently made a police report and applied for a card replacement at the Semporna National Registration Department (JPN) on July 28.
The Prosecuting Officer from JPN, Mohd Naser Mohd Nadzeri in his submission, pressed for a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to her and others as it was a serious offence.
“Had the accused succeeded in boarding the plane, she would have continued to use the card in Peninsular Malaysia including for seeking employment,” he pointed out.
He added that there could also be other negative implications like using Norlina’s card to commit offences, or causing Norlina’s bank account to be frozen, or Norlina being listed as having died.
Malyn, who was not represented, pleaded for minimum sentence including avoiding the jail term as her father is sick.
She was charged under Regulation 25(1) (0) of the 1990 National Registration Regulations (2007 Amendment) which is punishable by a maximum three years’ jail term or a fine of not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if found guilty.
