The offence under Section 15(1)(a) of DDA and punishable under Section 39C(2)/39B of DDA provides for a jail term of between seven and 13 years, and whipping of at least three strokes, on conviction.
The court ordered Hairul to serve the jail sentence from the date of his conviction and to be placed under police supervision after completing the jail sentence.
In mitigation, Hairul who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence saying that he has family to look after.
Hairul also promised that once released from prison, he would not repeat the offence.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that Hairul was not remorseful as he kept repeating taking drugs.
