A couple, Mayuni Hayeebuding, 48, and his wife, Nor Haznie Che Aziz, 40, were sentenced to 20 months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court today. They pleaded guilty to kidnapping a man last year. The plea came after the charges were read out before Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid. The court ruled that they would serve their sentence from the date of their arrest on January 17, 2023.
The couple, along with three others who are still fugitives, were accused of abducting Muhammad Alamin Ismail, 26, from a restaurant in Kampung Gong Jerat, Pengkalan Chepa, around 1 am on January 16 last year. The charge, under Section 363 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum jail term of seven years along with a fine, according to Section 34 of the same Act.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazalia Che Suhaimin handled the prosecution while both accused appeared in court without legal representation. This case highlights the seriousness of kidnapping offenses and the legal repercussions perpetrators face. It's a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for victims of such crimes.
Kidnapping incidents not only traumatize the victims but also cause distress to their families and communities. Therefore, it's crucial for law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate such cases and bring the culprits to justice. The sentencing of the married couple serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate committing similar offenses.
This case also underscores the significance of public cooperation in combating crime. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspects to come forward and assist with the investigation. Collaboration between law enforcement and the community is essential in maintaining peace and security.
As society grapples with various challenges, including crime, it's imperative to promote a culture of lawfulness and respect for the rights of others. This involves not only enforcing laws effectively but also fostering a sense of accountability and responsibility among individuals. By working together, we can create safer and more secure communities for everyone.
