Jailed and fined for setting car on fire

Kota Kinabalu: A 40-year-old man who suspected that his wife of having an affair was jailed 10 months and fined RM5,000 or another three months for committing mischief by burning a vehicle belonging to another woman.

Ak Mahathir Pg Bujang pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus.

He had committed the mischief by throwing a firecracker into the car belonging to a 41-year-old woman whose husband was being suspected of having an affair with Ak Mahathir’s wife.

The offence took place at noon on April 24 in front of a house in Kg Saga-Saga, Membakut.

During mitigation, Ak Mahathir, who was not represented, pleaded for leniency.

When asked why he committed such act, he said he saw his wife’s WhatsApp messages which proved that his wife was having an affair with the man.

Ak Mahathir said he wanted to meet the man to discuss what actually happened but ended throwing the firecrackers on the vehicle.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

The court heard that the complainant was informed by his brother-in-law that Ak Mahathir had entered the complainant’s premises.

Ak Mahathir had opened the door of the car belonging to the complainant’s wife and threw firecracker inside before fleeing.

The act caused the front passenger seat, seat belt, steering wheel, dashboard and roof lining destroyed.

Ak Mahathir was arrested following a police report.

The court ordered Ak Mahathir to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
