Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old man, who threatened to burn down the family home after his mother denied his demand for money last year, was jailed seven months by the Magistrate’s Court.

Mohammad Julkifli pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to criminally intimidating his 45-year-old mother, Sitti Kadih Mansul, by threatening to cause her fear for her safety at noon on Oct 16, 2024, at Kg Salagan, Lok Urai, Pulau Gaya.

AdvertisementThe offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that Mohammad frequently asked his mother for money.

Mohammad became angry and threatened to burn down their house.

Mohammad was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

Azriana Fasa, a vendor of traditional cakes, admitted before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to committing the offence at 9.13pm on Nov 29, 2024, in a hotel room, in Inanam.

The court adjourned the sentencing to April 15 pending the accused’s social report being prepared by the Welfare Department.

Azriana was released on a bail of RM2,000 with RM1,000 deposited in one surety.

She was charged under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine or both, on conviction.

Earlier, counsel Jagnesh Jaya, representing Azriana applied for a bond of good behaviour citing among others that she was a youthful offender and was remorseful of her action.

Jagnesh also said that he had advised the accused to obtain a report from the Welfare Department due to her age, and despite being aware of the potential consequences, she chose to proceed with the case.

Dzul, in adjourning the case, held that it would be best for her to refer to the Welfare Department to obtain a social report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Francis and Inspector Yusdi Basri prosecuted.
