Jamaican delegates arrive in London with slavery reparations petition

  • A Jamaican government delegation led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange has travelled to London to file a petition on slavery reparations with King Charles.
  • The filing marks the first time a Commonwealth state has used this specific legal route “for the cause of reparatory justice”.
  • The petition asks the King to refer legal questions to the Privy Council on whether enslavement broke laws and if Britain owes a legal duty of redress.
  • Minister Grange noted that the British Treasury was paying off debt used to compensate slave owners until as recently as 2015.
  • The delegation is also meeting with the British Museum to seek the repatriation of indigenous Taino cultural artefacts.
