The Inbetweeners star James Buckley appears to have accidentally let slip a detail about the upcoming third film in a video message for a fan.
Last week, fans were delighted to hear after months of speculation that The Inbetweeners 3 is on its way at Netflix, with all four core original cast members – Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison – signing on.
Filming has already kicked off, with Buckley, who played chronic liar Jay Cartwright in the Channel 4 series and its two subsequent spin-off films, “leaking” a detail about his character’s fate in a video for a fan.
Following the announcement about the new film, a TikTok user called Sydney posted a video message she’d purchased from Buckley for her loved ones on the video sharing app.
The clip – presumably purchased on video app Cameo, where Buckley is one of the UK’s biggest earners – showed the podcast host congratulating the couple in question on the news that they are expecting twins.
However, it was Buckley’s outfit that caught fans’ attention; not only was his hair Jay’s shade of blonde and cut into a mullet, but the actor wore a blue shirt and bright green jacket with the words “Cartwright Plant” partially visible on the chest.
In the original Inbetweeners series, Jay’s dad Terry (David Schaal) runs Cartwright Plant Hire, which suggests now that Jay is working for the family business in the new film.
The video was flooded with screenshots of the logo and speculation from fans, leading to the original poster responding: “Oh s*** I feel like I’ve leaked something now unknowingly.”
The Independent has contacted Netflix for comment.
Reports of a new film being in the works first sprung up last year, when creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris claimed that the Channel 4 comedy, which first ran on E4 from 2008 to 2010, would be returning in some form.
While some fans had feared that the series would instead be rebooted with a new young cast, Netflix instead confirmed that the original Inbetweeners were all returning for The Inbetweeners 3, with production beginning on 7 September.
Beesley and Morris, who are once again writing and directing the franchise, said: ”It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”
The latest movie, which follows on from Inbetweeners box office hit feature films from 2011 and 2014, is expected to be released in 2027. It is not currently known whether The Inbetweeners 3 will be released in cinemas before coming out on Netflix.
