- Whale has been living with stage four kidney cancer for five years and announced in May that he had stopped treatment.
- Whale said he would miss his wife and listeners. He said that he was "quite glad" to be checking out now.
- Whale, who has been a fixture on British radio and TV for five decades, said earlier this month that he’ll be “exceptionally lucky” if he makes it to Christmas.
