'Jangmi' likely to enter PAR later later today; Pagasa sees rainy season either first or second week of June

MANILA, Philippines – The rainy season may take place either on the first or second week of June, the chief of the state-run weather agency said on Thursday.

“At present, the isolated and scattered rains that we experience while we are still under dry season are due to the localized thunderstorms but we are now transitioning to rainy season,” Nathaniel Servando, administrator of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), told The Manila Times.

Meanwhile, Servando said the tropical storm called "Jangmi" (international name) would likely enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility later in the day as a severe tropical storm and would be called "Domeng," the fourth storm to hit the archipelago in 2026.

“It is forecast to reach typhoon category but is unlikely affect the weather conditions. It also has a remote chance to make landfall,” the Pagasa chief said.

Its trough or extension, however, has already been affecting some areas in Mindanao, he added.

The southwesterly wind flow – which brings warm, moist air from the southwest across the country – has been prevailing over Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos), BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Palawan in Luzon, the national weather bureau said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be experiencing partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated downpours or thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms, according to its latest advisory.
