  • A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 struck off the northern Japanese coast near Sanriku.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert for the region, including Iwate, Aomori, and southeastern Hokkaido.
  • Tsunamis of 80 centimetres and 40 centimetres were detected at ports in Iwate prefecture following the quake.
  • Authorities warned that a tsunami of up to 3 metres could potentially hit the affected areas.
  • The event occurred 15 years after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which caused over 22,000 deaths and widespread displacement in northern Japan.
