Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the National Monument and Japanese Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday morning, expressing deep respect and reflection during her official visit to Malaysia.

A heartfelt tribute
Takaichi laid a wreath and observed a moment of silence at the National Monument, which commemorates those who perished during World War II and Malaysia’s struggle for independence. She later shared on social media that she was touched by the opportunity to honour Japanese predecessors who passed away in Malaysia.
“Today, I visited the Kuala Lumpur Japanese Cemetery and laid flowers at the memorial. I was deeply moved to be able to pay my respects to those who lost their lives in Malaysia,” she stated.

Strengthening bilateral understanding
The Prime Minister also noted that her visit to National Monument deepened her reflection on Malaysia’s history and sacrifices made for peace and freedom. Her act of remembrance has been viewed as a meaningful gesture of reconciliation and mutual respect between the two nations.
Takaichi’s visit also coincided with her participation in the 47th ASEAN Summit and the 28th ASEAN Japan Summit, where she met with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss regional cooperation and bilateral ties.
