JB flash floods caused by fivefold increase in rainfall: Johor MB

JOHOR BARU – Flash floods in certain parts of Johor Baru today were caused by heavier than usual rainfall and high tides, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Viral photos of flooding around Sultanah Aminah Hospital and cars stuck in the floodwaters went viral today after an hour-long downpour around noon as social media users went online to vent their frustrations.

Various media reported that over 500 cars were damaged from floods that struck several roads including Jalan Yahya Awal, Jalan Ayer Molek and Jalan Wong Ah Fook in downtown Johor Baru.

These included cars parked at open-air car parks around Menara Tabung Haji and Wisma Persekutuan Johor Baru, and in the hospital compound.

“I was made to understand that rainfall today was heavier than usual, …breaching 100mm compared to the normal level of 20mm.

“The high tide of 1.15 metres also prevented water from flowing to the sea,” Onn Hafiz said in a Facebook post.

He said the Drainage and Irrigation Department has begun work to pump flood waters out of badly affected areas. – The Vibes, August 2, 2022
