It’s almost fascinating (and disgusting) when it comes to the “extra ingredients” that we can find in our food when dining out. From rats to maggots, the possibilities are endless. This time, a Malaysian family was shocked to find what appeared to be a vape battery in their hotpot.

On the Chinese social media platform Xiao Hong Shu, the mother, Carmen (not her real name) said they visited a hotpot restaurant in JB last month with her 2-year-old toddler and a friend. Everything was going well until Carmen’s shocking discovery in the soup – a battery that she suspected to be from a vape, which had been simmering in the soup for about an hour!

“It didn’t explode, and I can’t imagine if it did.”

Without wasting time, Carmen called 1 of the staff and the negotiations happened in 3 different “phases”.

1st phase

Carmen showed the foreign object to the staff, who told her he would check with the kitchen crew. When Carmen wanted to take an image of the object, he said no to Carmen. Regardless, she managed to take an image of the item before the staff left with it.

She then called him again and asked for the item, to which he said,

“We’ve thrown it away.”

Carmen regretted that she did not take a clear picture of it before she called the staff.

2nd phase

When such an incident took place, negotiations about the price are expected. Initially, Carmen was offered a 50% discount on the soup bases, and the restaurant was willing to serve a new batch of the food that she had ordered earlier.

“Do you think we’re still in the mood to eat?”

3rd phase

Here’s when the manager stepped in, and told Carmen that the soup bases would be on the house. After further discussions, the manager said the entire bill would be free instead, and the restaurant will cover her medical bill within the next 7 days.

On the same night, Carmen brought her toddler for a checkup at the clinic because she was worried about what she may have consumed.

“The components in the battery are what concerns me. What if it leads to more health complications in the future?”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Carmen, who has filed a police report said some netizens pointed out that it might be a pair of Bluetooth earphones instead.

“Even if it was really earphones, the components, which include batteries can still be harmful. I really should’ve taken an image of it.”

She also said that both the police and kitchen staff agreed that the foreign object was a vape battery.

When Carmen sent the bill to the restaurant, she was told that they will only pay the bill once.

“The bills that come after this have to be covered by myself and they will not take the responsibility,” she said.

Carmen also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the restaurant has yet to apologise to her since the incident took place in April and during this period of time, her baby and herself have fallen ill, which led her to share this story. The HQ of the restaurant had arranged a meeting with her and the JB branch but unfortunately, the representatives were not able to issue the address.

Have you spotted something “extra” in your hotpot meal? How will solve this issue if you find yourself in this situation?
