- Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic, shared a message to Pope Leo on Wednesday after the pontiff was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery.
- “Our family continues to pray for the good health and full recovery of Pope Leo XIV. May God grant him strength as he works to get better. I hope he knows that millions of American Christians are thinking about him,” Vance wrote.
- He added a separate message to the pope’s brother, writing, “We also want to send our best wishes to a true American original and great guy, Lou Prevost, who is also facing his own health challenges. May God keep both of these brothers healthy for years to come.”
- Pope Leo was admitted to a hospital in Rome Tuesday for surgery and had part of his right lung removed in an effort to eliminate all cancerous tissue. He was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.
- Leo was back on his feet Wednesday and has begun walking in his hospital room and eating normally, the Vatican said, though details about any future treatment have not yet been disclosed.
