Jealousy rears its ugly head in apparent murder-suicide in Johor

A DOUBLE fatality is being investigated as a suspected murder-cum-suicide in Taman Austin Heights, Johor Baru, after a Myanmar woman and her former boyfriend were discovered dead near a workers' hostel last night.

The tragic incident, which police believe was driven by jealousy, occurred at approximately 7.40 pm.

The 33-year-old woman was fatally attacked with a 24-centimetre knife, which was recovered at the scene, as she walked along a lane leading to the accommodation.

The suspect, also a Myanmar national and the woman's former partner, is believed to have taken his own life immediately following the attack.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat confirmed the sequence of events. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the foreign man attacked the victim with a knife before ending his own life at the scene."

In the ensuing violence, two bystanders who attempted to intervene were injured. "Two others — a 23-year-old foreign woman and a 27-year-old Malaysian man were injured when they tried to intervene," Commissioner Raub stated. Both injured parties are currently receiving treatment at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.

While the "motive is still under investigation," Commissioner Raub noted that "early findings point to a domestic dispute."

The police are urging any witnesses to come forward and contact the Johor Baru South district hotline on 07-2182323. - October 21, 2025
