RSN Rayer, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Jelutong, has boldly stepped forward to offer his pro bono legal services to the detained leaders and members of Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH), who are currently facing charges under the controversial Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma). His stance has drawn attention, especially as he becomes the only backbencher to openly oppose the use of Sosma within his party’s ranks.

This unexpected development came in response to Takiyuddin Hassan, the Perikatan Nasional MP for Kota Bharu, during a heated session in the Dewan Rakyat. Takiyuddin took a jab at Pakatan Harapan (PH) for what he perceived as silence from the coalition on the use of Sosma against GISBH members. He pointed out that PH had long criticized the law as being draconian when they were in opposition.

Takiyuddin urged the current government to clarify its position on Sosma, noting that while Perikatan Nasional accepted the law in principle, it strongly opposed its misuse, such as in the case of the detained GISBH members.

"For Perikatan Nasional, we accept Sosma rationally. What we disagree with is its abuse, such as when it is used against members of GISBH," Takiyuddin said, while debating the 2025 Supply Bill.

Seizing the opportunity to express his disagreement, Rayer quickly interjected and aligned himself with Takiyuddin’s criticism, stating, "I agree with you. As a backbencher, I will oppose the use of Sosma." He further announced his willingness to represent the detained GISBH members pro bono, providing legal defense at no charge.

This move by Rayer not only demonstrates his opposition to the misuse of Sosma but also positions him as a defender of legal rights and due process, earning him rare praise from the opposition. Takiyuddin, in a moment of bipartisan appreciation, acknowledged Rayer’s bravery for standing up against the law and humorously dubbed him the "Tiger of Jelutong," a title previously held by the late Karpal Singh, a renowned lawyer and former DAP chairman.

Karpal Singh, the former Jelutong MP, was known for his fearless approach in both the legal field and Parliament, a legacy that Rayer’s actions seem to echo in this instance. The "Tiger of Jelutong" moniker, once given to Karpal, reflected his tenacity and legal prowess, and Rayer’s willingness to challenge Sosma in defense of the GISBH detainees certainly draws parallels to the legendary lawyer.

The charges against the GISBH members stem from their alleged involvement in organized criminal activities. Among the 58 people detained, some of the group's top leadership, including CEO Nasiruddin Ali and Adib At-Tamimi Ashaari (son of the late Al-Arqam founder), have been in custody. They, along with 19 others, were charged with membership in an organized criminal group dating back to 2020. However, no plea was recorded during their recent appearance at the Selayang sessions court, as the case will be transferred to the High Court.

Rayer’s offer of legal representation and his open opposition to Sosma’s application in this case bring a renewed spotlight on the contentious law, which has long been criticized for its potential to violate human rights. As the debate over Sosma continues, Rayer’s stand may pave the way for further discussions within the government on how to balance security measures with civil liberties.
