  • Lufthansa Group has cancelled 20,000 flights, approximately one per cent of its schedule, to combat the soaring cost of jet fuel.
  • The airline aims to save 40,000 metric tonnes of fuel over the next six months, citing a doubling in price.
  • Unprofitable short-haul flights operated by its regional subsidiary, Lufthansa CityLine, are primarily affected, with 27 aircraft permanently removed.
  • The initial 120 daily cancellations began on Monday and will continue until the end of May, with passengers already informed.
  • Despite the inconvenience, The Independent’s travel correspondent Simon Calder noted passengers could often be re-routed, and the group anticipates a stable fuel supply for its summer timetable.
