Clarification and concern on ‘Labor group criticizes DOLE reversal on Palawan workers regularization’ by William Depasupil which appeared in The Manila Times on May 11, 2026:
WE write in response to the article published by The Manila Times concerning the recent labor case involving JGC Philippines Inc. and Coral Bay Nickel Corp. in the Rio Tuba Export Processing Zone, Bataraza, Palawan.
While we recognize the important role of the media, we express concern over the lack of balanced reporting in the article. As a principal party to the case, JGC Philippines Inc. was neither consulted nor given the opportunity to present its side prior to publication, resulting in a one-sided narrative that does not fully reflect the facts.
Responsible journalism requires due diligence and the inclusion of all relevant perspectives, particularly in matters of legal significance. Unfortunately, this standard was not observed.
The article highlighted the findings of the DOLE Regional Office but failed to mention that these were duly elevated and reviewed by the DOLE Central Office. The subsequent reversal by the Office of the Undersecretary was the result of a lawful process that ensured due process, including the opportunity for JGC Philippines Inc. to present evidence — an opportunity not adequately afforded at the regional level.
JGC Philippines Inc. pursued the proper legal remedies in good faith, and the DOLE Central Office decision affirms the company’s compliance with Philippine labor laws. Presenting only a partial account risks misleading the public and undermines confidence in due process.
In this regard, we respectfully urge The Manila Times to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity by ensuring balanced reporting and by giving all parties the opportunity to be heard.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
