The infamous saga of the USD 250 million superyacht once owned by Malaysian fugitive Jho Low takes a new twist as it emerges that Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is now the proud owner of the yacht. The 91.5-meter vessel, initially named Equanimity, was allegedly purchased using misappropriated 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds, and its history has now become as complicated as it is luxurious.
Seized by Malaysian authorities in 2018, the yacht was sold in 2019 to a unit of the Genting Group for a fraction of its original value. It was rebranded as Tranquility and offered for charter at a staggering USD 1.25 million (~RM 5.47 million) per week. However, its new owner, Newell, has since made headlines not just for his video game empire, but for his growing fleet of luxury yachts, including this once-controversial vessel.
A recent article from Luxury Launches revealed that the Tranquility, now part of Newell's collection, continues to exude opulence. The yacht features five decks, a beach club, a full gym, a Finnish sauna, and even two touch-and-go helipads. It’s no surprise that Newell’s superyacht armada is valued at over USD 1 billion (~RM 4.38 billion), with Tranquility undergoing further upgrades to serve as a support vessel for Newell’s flagship yacht, Project Y722.
Designed by Andrew Winch, Tranquility is a symbol of excess, offering a sprawling interior with murals, chandeliers, a formal dining area, and a cinema-style television. Its size and grandeur, however, are perhaps overshadowed by its history, which now connects Newell’s name with the highly publicized 1MDB scandal that continues to haunt the region.
From Jho Low’s alleged misdeeds to a new chapter in billionaire luxury, the journey of Equanimity, now Tranquility, serves as a reminder of how wealth, power, and scandal often collide in the world of the super-rich.
