Jill Biden has shared new details about her husband Joe’s cancer diagnosis and the major symptom that led to its discovery.
The former president, 83, was diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer in May 2025. He began radiation and hormone therapy that October.
Speaking on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s radio show Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, the former first lady, 75, revealed she first noticed that something might be wrong when Joe regularly got up “seven times a night” to use the bathroom.
Jill recalled informing the White House doctors about Joe’s nightly routine, but nothing came of it, so she “thought it was addressed.”
“But when it continued when we got out of the White House [in January 2025], I said, ‘Joe, we’ve got to go up to Jeff in Philly — something’s wrong,’” she recounted.
She noted that her husband “will forever live with cancer,” due to it metastasizing to his bones before it was caught.
“We have to be mindful of it every three months, testing and medicines,” Jill added. “And anybody who’s gone through this cancer journey — and I’ve been through it many times with members of my family, of course with Beau — it’s constant. It’s daily. And I think it’s challenging.”
Joe’s eldest son, Beau, whom he shared with his late first wife, Neilia Hunter, died from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in 2015.
Shortly after his cancer diagnosis, the Democratic politician gave his first public health update, telling reporters that he was “feeling good.”
“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” Joe said after delivering a Memorial Day speech in his home state of Delaware in May 2025. “It’s all a matter of taking a pill, one particular pill, for the next six weeks. And the expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this.”
Prostate cancer is common, affecting about 1 in 8 men in the U.S. during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. It is considered one of the most treatable types of cancers, especially when caught early.
Last month, Joe addressed concerns about his ongoing treatment, saying: “I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family. I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well.
“I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It’s meant the world to me and to Jill,” he added in a video, announcing his new memoir, Promise Me, America, out November 17.
