(Opening shot: Jimmy Kimmel walks onto the stage to applause. He waves, takes a sip of water, and leans into the mic.)

JIMMY KIMMEL:

Thank you, thank you, everyone! Please, have a seat. We have a great show for you tonight. But first, let’s talk about something truly shocking. And no, I don’t mean another reboot of The Office.

Over in Malaysia, former anti-corruption chief Latheefa Koya just came out swinging against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. And when I say swinging, I mean full-on Mike Tyson in his prime.

She called his so-called "war on corruption" nothing but "theatre." And honestly, if it was a theatre production, it would be one of those really bad community plays where the lead actor forgets his lines and the stage collapses midway through.

(audience laughter)

She said Anwar is all talk, no action—like a politician who promises free WiFi but can’t even fix a broken streetlight. And look, I don’t know if Anwar’s fighting corruption, but judging by how his coalition’s running the country, he might be corrupting fighting.

(audience laughter)

Now, Latheefa also pointed out the irony of Anwar’s government dropping corruption charges against his allies while going after his enemies. She basically said, “If this is a war on corruption, then it’s like a diet where you cut out carbs but eat two cakes a day.”

(audience laughter)

And here’s where it gets spicy—Anwar suggested that past corruption convictions, including Najib Razak’s, might have been politically motivated. That’s right. Anwar is now wondering if the guy who stole billions of dollars, got caught, was found guilty by multiple courts… might actually be the victim.

(audience groans, laughter)

Yeah, next thing you know, he’ll be saying the Mona Lisa stole his smile.

(audience laughter)

And Latheefa wasn’t having any of it. She basically said, “If you think Najib is a victim, then just release him!” Which is a little like saying, “If you really believe your ex is ‘the one,’ then go ahead—text them at 2 a.m.”

(audience laughter)

But Anwar? Oh, he’s waffling. He’s dancing around the issue like he’s auditioning for Dancing with the Stars: Political Edition. Latheefa called his whole act “theatrics,” which, let’s be honest, is the best review he’s gotten in years.

(audience laughter)

And while he’s out there giving speeches about foreign investments, Malaysians are just wondering, "Sir, where are the results?" He’s like that one friend who’s always saying, “Trust me, big things are coming,” but it’s been two years and all they have is a podcast no one listens to.

(audience laughter)

Meanwhile, food prices are up, people are struggling, and the government’s response? "Just be patient." Which is exactly what airlines say when your flight is five hours delayed, and you know they have no idea what’s going on.

(audience laughter, applause)

So yeah, it’s a horrible time in Malaysia. Corruption’s thriving, prices are skyrocketing, and everyone’s frustrated. It’s kind of like watching Game of Thrones—but only Season 8, on repeat.

(audience groans, laughter)

But hey, at least we now know Anwar is good at one thing—acting. Just too bad it’s not in governing.

(audience laughter, applause)

We’ve got a great show for you tonight! Stick around, we’ll be right back!

(Cut to commercial.)

I follow Jimmy Kimmel. I thought if he's commenting on Malaysian politics, he might just make light over the seriousness expressed by Latheefa Koya’s recent scathing assessment of Anwar Ibrahim’s government in an interview with Dennis Ignatius, my tennis buddy at the Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur).
