MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has been elected as chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, placing him at the helm of legislative measures involving the country's election laws and processes.
Estrada replaced Senate President Pro Tempore Tito Sotto III, who was elected as chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Works.
Estrada has been detained since June 1 over plunder charges in connection with the flood control scandal.
Meanwhile, new committee chairmanships of the Senate minority have been announced by Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, with Sen. Imee Marcos appointed as its deputy minority leader.
Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, who is also detained over plunder charges, will chair the Senate Committee on Tourism.
