British comedian John Bishop has been forced to cancel a forthcoming tour of the US on the advice of medical experts.
The Liverpudlian stand-up, known for his appearances on series such as Live at the Apollo and A League of Their Own, was involved in a motorcycle crash, injuring his leg.
Bishop had been set to perform six shows across the US and Canada in October. On Wednesday (16 September), he shared a video to X, formerly Twitter, in which he could be seen wearing a medical air boot.
“One of the consequences that I found out about breaking your ankle is that you have to wear this boot for six weeks,” he stated.
“And when you're wearing this boot, you can't fly long haul flights and because of that, I've got to cancel the tours I was gonna do in Canada and America in October.
“This is a message to apologise to everyone that we've had to cancel it, for obvious reasons, that I'm not able to fly.”
Bishop wrote in the post that he was “absolutely gutted”, and had been “so looking forward to coming back over and seeing you all”.
He confirmed that organisers would be in touch regarding tickets that had already been purchased.
“Hopefully we're gonna reschedule the dates and let you know when we can do them again,” he added in the video.
“So I apologise but under medical advice, I'm not to be a k**b-head and crash my motorbike again.”
Bishop had previously been forced to pull out of a charity bike ride with former Olympic track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy as a result of his injury.
The comedian, 59, received some unlikely promotion in the US last year, when his life story was loosely adapted into a Hollywood film directed by Bradley Cooper.
Is This Thing On? starred Arrested Development’s Will Arnett as a man going through a separation from his wife (played by Laura Dern), who starts performing stand-up comedy.
Drawing from elements of Bishop’s own biography – but transposing the setting to New York City – the film received warm reviews and was briefly tipped for Academy Awards contention (though this never materialised).
Bishop can next be seen hosting Wisdom of the Crowd, a new Saturday night game show in which contestants must try and best a studio audience in guessing the answers to difficult questions.
The first episode airs at 9.15pm on BBC One on 19 September.
