Loan sharks in Batu Pahat, Johor, had allegedly set fire to the wrong house, causing a 38-year-old woman and her teenage sons to have to seek shelter with relatives.
According to China Press, it all started when a petrol bomb was thrown at the woman’s house in the wee hours of the morning while the woman was overseas but her sons were at home, fast asleep. Her 15-year-old son had woken up to a loud noise, and upon inspection, he noticed the fire and quickly ran to wake his 18-year-old brother up.
They then attempted to leave through the front of the house but the electric gate had been damaged and could not open. Though, thankfully, they managed to get out of the house through the back door.
A neighbour had spotted the fire and called the fire brigade, who had put the fire out upon arriving at the scene.
The loan sharks had left a threatening note outside and it was then discovered that they were, in fact, targeting the family’s neighbour’s house. The note also contained information on the neighbour’s youngest daughter who was working in Singapore.
When the neighbour had gone to make a police report, it was revealed that their youngest daughter had already paid off her debts to the loan shark but they were still adamant in harassing them.
The burnt property has since been sealed off for investigations and the damages are estimated at tens of thousands of Ringgit.
Penggaram ADUN, Gan Peck Cheng, has since requested that the authorities take swift and effective action against the perpetrators, adding that there have been similar cases but this time, they’ve taken things too far.
