Johor immigration officers arrested 40 undocumented migrants, including children, in a midnight raid on an illegal settlement in Kampung Baru Muafakat

JOHOR BAHRU: The Immigration Department busted an illegal foreign settlement in a midnight raid, detaining 40 individuals for various offences.

The operation, codenamed Ops Sapu, was carried out at a residence in Kampung Baru Muafakat just after midnight.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said those detained comprised 31 Pakistani men, three Myanmar men, two Myanmar women, a Myanmar boy, two Indonesian women and an Indonesian girl.

Their ages ranged from two to 59 years old.

“All of them were resting in a squatter house with many rooms that had been used as a living quarters for the past two months when Ops Sapu was carried out,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Rusdi said some attempted to evade inspection by fleeing and hiding in rooms but were apprehended by enforcement officers.

Checks found the migrants did not possess valid travel documents and had overstayed in the country.

All detainees are believed to have committed offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

They have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further investigation and action.
