Johor moves Ros Merah Flats storm victims to Pelangi Indah PPR

JOHOR BARU – A total of 18 families from the Ros Merah Flats in Taman Johor Jaya here, who were placed at a temporary relief centre after their homes were hit by a storm last Friday, will be moved to the Pelangi Indah People’s Housing Programme.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the three-month temporary placement for each of the affected families will be fully borne by the state government, including the deposit, monthly rent, and utility payment.

“However long they stay here, it will be free. However, (the state government will consider) letting them stay here for free so long as their homes are not ready.

“The cost of repairing the Ros Merah Flats is estimated at RM1 million and will be borne by the state government. We expect the repairs to take about three months and the contractor has also started work,” he told a media conference after the ceremony to hand over the Pelangi Indah PPR house keys and offer letters to the storm victims here today.

He said the Taman Johor Jaya Multipurpose Hall relief centre, which housed all the affected victims since Friday, would be closed soon.

When asked what would happen to victims who want to continue staying in the Pelangi Indah PPR, Jafni said the state government would consider the matter.

“I also heard their pleas. This PPR is for the B40 group and those with monthly earnings of less than RM3,000, so I will ask the Johor State Housing Development Corporation to check their qualifications. If they qualify, they can apply, and Insya-Allah, the state government will consider,” he said.

On Friday, a storm occurred at around 3pm, damaging several homes in the flats. All the affected residents were relocated to the Taman Johor Jaya Multipurpose Hall relief centre from 4.30pm on the same day. – Bernama, August 17, 2022
