BARISAN Nasional (BN) has struck a balance between renewal and experience in its candidate selection for the 16th Johor state election, fielding a mix of fresh faces, established grassroots leaders and former senior government figures as it seeks to retain its grip on the state administration.
Johor BN chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi on Wednesday announced a 56-member line-up comprising 37 candidates from UMNO, 15 from MCA and four from MIC.
The coalition has retained a strong core of incumbents and veteran politicians, with 36 candidates having previously contested or held elected office, while 20 newcomers have been introduced as part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the coalition's leadership ranks.
Among the most notable first-time candidates is UMNO executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, who will make his electoral debut in Benut, a constituency long associated with former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad.
The candidate list also highlights BN's attempt to cultivate younger leaders, particularly within its component parties.
In Serom, BN has selected Ledang UMNO Puteri chief Nadhirah Afiqah Abdull Rahim as a new candidate, replacing incumbent Khairin-Nisa Ismail @ Md On.
MCA has similarly elevated younger leaders, including Youth Central Committee member See Ann Giap, who will contest Jementah for the first time.
The party's gradual generational transition is further reflected through the candidacies of Chua Jian Boon in Layang-Layang, Yap Zhi Peng in Mengkibol and Teow Chia Ling in Puteri Wangsa.
MIC, meanwhile, has fielded 29-year-old V. Rugendran in Kahang, making him one of the youngest candidates on BN's ticket.
The coalition's line-up also reveals significant seat reallocations among its component parties, underscoring strategic adjustments ahead of the closely watched state contest.
One of the most striking changes sees Layang-Layang, previously contested by UMNO, handed to MCA, with Chua Jian Boon nominated to represent the coalition there.
In return, Tenggaroh, traditionally viewed as a MIC stronghold, has been allocated to UMNO, which will field Mohd Youzaimi Yusof.
MIC has instead been assigned Kemelah and Perling. Former Tenggaroh assemblyman and ex-Johor executive councillor K. Ravinkumar will contest Kemelah, while Pannir Selvan Paliksina has been selected for Perling, a seat previously contested by MCA.
Despite introducing new faces, BN's campaign remains firmly anchored by experienced leaders with established support networks at the grassroots level.
All nine serving Johor executive councillors, including Onn Hafiz himself, will defend their respective constituencies.
They are Datuk Zahari Sarip (Buloh Kasap), Ir Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh (Bukit Pasir), Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid (Semerah), Datuk Ling Tian Soon (Yong Peng), Lee Ting Han (Paloh), Aznan Tamin (Tanjung Surat), Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor (Bukit Permai), Mohd Hairi Mad Shah (Larkin) and Onn Hafiz in Machap.
The candidate announcement also marks the political comeback of former Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, who has been nominated for Pasir Raja in place of incumbent Rashidah Ismail.
Adham, who heads UMNO's Tenggara division, previously served two terms as Pasir Raja assemblyman between 2008 and 2018 and later held the Tenggara parliamentary seat for two terms. He was not fielded in the 15th General Election.
Equally noteworthy is the absence of former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad from the candidate list, ending a lengthy association with the Benut constituency that he had represented for many years.
The final line-up reflects BN's attempt to project both continuity and renewal, retaining influential incumbents while gradually ushering in a younger generation of leaders as the coalition prepares for what is expected to be a closely scrutinised electoral contest on 11 July. - June 25, 2026
