KUALA LUMPUR – Upcoming Johor state elections, which Barisan Nasional (BN) is to contest alone, will not impact dynamics of the federal unity government, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.

“In this era, no single party will dominate. It can be one arrangement at federal level and a different one in the state government,” he said when asked about the federal government’s stability after the dissolution of Johor’s legislative assembly yesterday, paving the way for state elections.

“All parties have to accept the reality that the country’s political landscape has changed,” he added, stressing that Malaysians need to cultivate more political maturity.

“The challenge is to educate voters to accept this as the political norm.”

Local media reported his remarks after he attended an event for taxi and bus drivers at the Kota Tinggi Bus and Taxi Terminal here today. Mohamed Khaled is also the Kota Tinggi MP.

He said the decision to dissolve the Johor legislative assembly and hold state elections within 60 days was “timely”.

Factors to be taken into account were the usual year-end floods in the state and festive seasons.

"Johor has a narrow window left this year. By November, December and January, we will be facing the monsoon season and floods, particularly in areas such as Kota Tinggi.

"Then, February and March will coincide with the Hari Raya celebrations. In Johor, the festive season is usually quite prolonged," he said as reported by Bernama. - June 2, 2026
