Johor PRN: EC forecasts 70% turnout as 2.7 million voters prepare to cast ballots

THE Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) expects around 70 per cent or 1.8 million voters to cast their ballots in the 16th Johor State Election tomorrow.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the anticipated increase compared with the 2022 Johor state election was driven by growing public interest and greater participation in the democratic process.

"We are seeing a stronger inclination and interest among voters to cast their ballots this time, supported by continuous campaigning activities.

"We expect voter turnout could reach around 70 per cent. I believe the enthusiasm among the people to participate in the democratic process has been relatively high recently," he said after inspecting ballot boxes at Dewan Serbaguna Permas, Kukup, near Pontian today.

The Johor state election involves more than 2.7 million registered voters, with 1,076 polling centres and 4,849 voting streams established across the state.

Ramlan said the inspection of ballot boxes was a crucial step to ensure all election equipment and materials were complete, organised and ready for polling day.

"So far, I have been informed that almost all returning officers at the 56 constituencies across Johor are prepared. Alhamdulillah, the process has been running smoothly," he said.

Voting will begin at 8am tomorrow, with most polling centres scheduled to close at 5pm.

Ramlan also reminded postal voters to return their ballot papers no later than 6pm tomorrow to ensure their votes are counted.

He said a total of 24,677 postal ballot papers had been issued to eligible voters, including election officers and Malaysians residing outside the state.

A total of 43,036 EC personnel will be deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the Johor state election. - July 10, 2026
