Johor has emerged as a significant player in the data centre industry, attracting more than 50 data centres in just two years, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. A key factor in this rapid growth is the state's robust infrastructure and ample power capacity, particularly highlighted by the Sedenak Tech Park (STeP) in Kulai, which alone boasts a capacity exceeding one gigawatt (GW).
Onn Hafiz emphasized Johor’s impressive progress compared to other regional hubs. He noted that while Singapore took over 15 years to establish itself as a data hub with more than 70 data centres and a total capacity of 1.4 GW, Johor has achieved remarkable success in just a fraction of the time. This rapid development underscores Johor’s potential to become a new data centre hub in Asia.
Speaking at the launch of the Princeton Digital Group JH1 Campus, Onn Hafiz expressed his confidence in Johor’s trajectory. He stated that the state's rapid growth in the data centre industry is a clear indication of its capability to position itself as a prominent data centre hub in the region. The event was also attended by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Johor State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs, and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han.
Onn Hafiz highlighted that Johor’s rise is fueled by its strong government policies, robust connectivity, and infrastructure. As one of the fastest-growing states, Johor is increasingly recognized for its push towards a digital economy. Looking ahead, the state government plans to be more selective with future data centre projects, emphasizing the use of green technology and renewable energy to ensure sustainable growth.
In addition to its digital advancements, Johor is set to benefit from the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). This zone will offer special economic regulations and incentives, creating a favorable environment for investors. Onn Hafiz underscored the importance of balancing economic and digital growth with community engagement, ensuring that progress benefits everyone and promotes inclusive development.
